There may be times when we are too busy to see the poor or hear their
cries for help. There may be times when
we don’t have money to help the poor.
There may be moments when we turn away because the situation is too sad
or too complex to do much for a particular poor person. There even may be times when we discern that
our money or help will not do much to improve the lot of the poor in general and we are hesitant to give.
None of those reasons will be judged harshly … if at other times we do respond when we are more financially capable of helping, if we do listen and help in situations where help is needed and if our hearts generally are soft to
those in countless places of need. Jesus
tells us to give to those that ask and there are hundreds of verses in the
Bible telling us to remember the poor with generosity. Each one of us can respond with something
and in some way, to those less
fortunate. God is compassionate to us
and we should be to others. If our
hearts are stone cold to the poor and we are not compassionate in giving … we could
be judged like the Rich Man ((Luke 16:19-31) and we may find the door closed
when need help.
“Whoever shuts his ears to the
cry of the poor, will also cry himself and not be heard” (Proverbs 21:13 NKJV).
